BRIAN JEAN FLIP FLOPS ON GSAs IN RACE TO APPEASE HARD RIGHT

EDMONTON – Wildrose Leader Brian Jean’s about-face on whether schools should phone home if students participate in a Gay-Straight Alliance Club demonstrates an alarming willingness to say anything to appease the hard-right, NDP MLA Michael Connolly said today.

On Monday of this week, Brian Jean said Jason Kenney is wrong: schools shouldn’t phone home if students decide to join a GSA. On Tuesday, Brian Jean said Jason Kenney is right: it’s just fine with him if schools phone home if students join a GSA.

“Brian Jean’s initial position suggested he might be willing to stand up to Jason Kenney’s extreme views,” said Connolly. “I guess not. Apparently what Mr. Jean believes on fundamental issues are open to negotiation. It’s disappointing.

“If Mr. Jean so easily abandons his principles for narrow-political gain on an issue like GSAs, it’s fair to ask what other principles he will throw overboard every time he gets a little pressure from social conservative extremists.

“Albertans are asking ‘Just what does Brian Jean stand for?’ The answer, I am afraid, is whatever Jason Kenney, anti-gay activists, and others on the extreme right tell him to stand for.   It’s a shame.”
