$57,048 to $65,448 annually

Hours Per Week:

36.25 hours per week. 

Additional Information:

Reporting to the MLA, the Constituency Assistant will be a liaison between the MLA and their constituency, community groups, stakeholders, and individuals. The individual will be required to work in a challenging, variable environment and take responsibility for assisting the MLA with community outreach, social media, casework, office management, correspondence, and preparation for session in the Legislative Assembly. 

 

This position is based in Edmonton, and will supervise up to three part-time staff and a variable number of volunteers. 

 

Travel to events and meetings across the constituency will be required. 

 

Job Duties:

 

Casework and Correspondence

Triage the office email account, and work with part-time staff to ensure correspondence is handled appropriately

Administer and log incoming phone calls, emails, and walk-in traffic

Manage and respond to constituent casework including outreach and correspondence

Assist constituents with accessing government services and programs

 

Outreach

Organize, outreach activities that offer both visibility for the MLA and opportunities to receive constituent feedback

Contact community organizations about MLA participation in events

Staff the MLA at community events and activities

Develop and maintain effective working relationships with key individuals and organizations in the community, working on similar issues.

Arrange and attend stakeholder meetings with the Member as required.

Monitor events in riding and advise the MLA on issues concerning the riding

 

Communications

Responsible for the preparation and proofing all digital and print newsletters.

Drafting and posting content for the Member’s social media channels (website, Facebook, Twitter, Threads, Instagram), and social media monitoring.

Research and prepare materials for QP, Member’s statements, and speeches/speaking notes for use in the Assembly and Committees.

Respond to correspondence from constituents and stakeholders

 

Office Administration

Coordinates the MLA’s schedule

Provides supervision over part-time staff and volunteers

Assists MLA in purchasing, vendor payments, budgeting, and financial reporting

Assist with other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications and Skills:

Degree in a relevant field or equivalent work experience

Experience in supervising employees

Strong time management, organizational, and research skills

Ability to effectively set priorities, and adjust as required

Excellent communication skills (verbal and emphasis on written)

The ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Sound political judgment, tact and diplomacy

Knowledge of provincial government departments and services, as well as community organizations

Familiarity with MS Windows, Office (including Outlook and Word), and databases

Graphic design skills and experience managing social media accounts for organizations

Willingness to travel and work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends

A demonstrated commitment to community volunteerism

A strong understanding of the political history of the constituency and of Alberta politics

Vehicle and driver’s license, an asset
