Statement: North Edmonton MLAs address incident in Castledowns neighbourhood
June 21, 2017
Edmonton – NDP MLAs Chris Nielsen and Nicole Goehring issued the following statement today:
“There is no place for racism in our community. No one should feel scared to leave their home, drop their kids off at school or talk with their neighbours. Acts of intimidation in our communities because of an individual’s race, culture or faith are not tolerated by Albertans.
“Speaking to the incident that occurred yesterday in the Castledowns area, the confederate flag does not represent our Canadian values. It is widely seen as a symbol of racism and violence and I want to commend Mohamed Rahall for displaying courage and wisdom in a very difficult situation. If you see or experience harassment that makes you feel unsafe, please report it to the police.
“It is important for Albertans to continue fighting racism when we see it. Let us continue to be a safe, welcoming and inclusive province for all.”
Chris Nielsen, MLA for Edmonton – Decore
Nicole Goehring, MLA for Edmonton – Castle Downs
